Allow me to vent?

There is so much speculation going around my office this week that I am about to buy a pair of noise canceling ear phones so I don't hear them anymore.

Apparently, those here that survived the last merger (10 years ago) think they have a pretty good idea of how it's going to go down. We will all be re-interviewed and will have to list all of our job duties and what not. Then most of the senior management will be moved, fired, or asked to retire early. A couple people in our office have already started packing up their things. SCARY. Me? I'm business as usual until they kick me out. Actually, I've been working harder. In the words of Jim Halpert, "I only slack off when things are good."

My boss thinks that all of our files will be internally audited. And that really sucks considering I have four SEPERATE filing systems.

It took me eight hours to reorganize one of them. Three more to go.

My biggest worry though, besides losing my job of course, is the change in benefits. Right now, our benefits are company paid. Will that remain? Because having to pay for my benefits will take a HUGE chunk out of my paycheck if I want them to be as good as they are now. Not to mention, I get tuition reimbursement now. Will that continue?

Will we still get all of our vacation? Will we get sick days? Will we get an opportunity to speak with someone and let them know our career and promotion goals? Who will my boss be?

So many unanswered questions and you know what the new company has told us? Not a damn thing.

But you know what? I'm going on vacation next week and I've decided, that from this point on, I'm not worrying about it until I get back. Maybe not even then. Worrying changes nothing.

Niagara Falls..here I come.

Thank you guys so much for listening. I know I've been a crappy blogger lately, and haven't been commenting on all of your blogs, but I am still reading, I am keeping up as much as I can. I love you all and all of your support!

You've got the right idea. Don't stress over what you can't change, prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and deal with what comes.
Then teach ME how to do that. ;)

ahhh that's so great you're going on vacation during this super tense time at work, plus who knows what will happen, you should use your vacation time while you have it!!

I really hope things work out, I doubt you have much to worry about, as you said it's the senior people in upper management that will likely be moved around!

I hope your benefits stick around!

Hi Jumble,
I think you are on the right track too. No sense in worrying about what you can't change. I don't think one merger is necessarily like another and I have seen good and bad. Some of the things you mentioned occurred, but many times the new company just wants the business to continue as usual.

I agree it's best to stick with the status quo, keep your head down and work (minus vacay, which will be a great break for you!). One thing for sure, those being negative and stirring the shit arent' going to help matters or themselves in the long run.

Hang in there. :-)

Your question and concerns are right on point with anyone in your situation. I can pretty much guarantee that your health benefits will become partially paid by the company. Hardly anyone gets fully paid health ins now and since your company was bought out, chances are that's the first targeted cut they will make. Can you tell I've been there too many times?!

I hope things go well and that the worst won't be that bad. :( Good luck.

I am going through a merger/acquisition too and it is NOT fun. No matter how secure you felt/feel, there's always the fear of the unknown. Best of luck. All will be well.

Hi Jumble. These are certainly uncertain times for you, but it's probably quite a good time to be going off on your vacation. Have a wonderful time! You're right, all the worrying in the world is not going to change anything. Do hope it will all work out for you okay.

I think you've got the right idea with the business as usual attitude. Wasting hours worrying changes nothing so have a total blast on your holiday and don't forget to come back and tell us all about it.

Keep your chin up. Be optimistic but yet prepared for the worst. But don't fret about it either way is the best advice that I can give.

I'm pretty much the same as the others, prepare for the worst but don't expect it.
People waste a lot of angst and worry over things that will happen..or not.
Enjoy the hols:)

I think you're doing the best you possibly can right now. Freaking out will only make things much more stressful.. do exactly what you're doing, and worry when it's actually time to worry. I wish you luck.

And.. most importantly.. enjoy your vacation!! Don't let this job stuff get in the way of a good time. Niagara Falls is gorgeous!

I agree with you completely. Why worry about something you have no control over? Have a great vacation!

I love your attitude! Have an awesome vacation!

Sounds like your company could use a little advice from the education field. Oh, wait. Our administration doesn't tell us anything either. I might as well be working for a company like yours.

Good luck with the merger and you're right to stop worrying because it truly never helps.

On a happier note, I'm your newest follower and that brings you to
140 - a nice solid even number! (Unless your into odd numbers, in which case I probably just completely ruined your day! heehee ;)

Enjoy your vacation!!!!!

Holy shit, this is EXACTLY what I'm going through now at my job! I was "fired" and then "rehired" at a less rate and less vacation and all. It BLOWS!

I'm following you to Niagara instead of putting up with this.

Job stress SUCKS. It's the eternal not-knowing that's a killer.
