Insert Foot in Mouth

As most of you know, I work for a coal company. Well, there is this older gentleman that is like super rich because he owns his own coal company and he comes in every now again to meet with our sales department.

Pretty much every time he comes in he stops and chats with me. He is a really nice guy and we kinda have to kiss his ass because we profit from him.

Anyways, the other day he comes up to me and asks how I am doing and what not. We exchange pleasantries back and forth and then pretty randomly he says, "Do you watch any reality television?"

Me: I watch American Idol, but I really don't get into anything else.

Him: Oh. Have you ever seen The Bachelor?

Me: I used to watch it when it first aired, but it got old. It's so repetitive and I'm definitely not a fan of the guy on there this season.

Him: Why don't you like him?

Me: Just things I've seen and read. Seems like a jerk to me.

Him: Well you should check it out tonight if you get a chance.

Me: Why?

Him: You may find it interesting.

Puzzled, I agreed to check it out, mostly because I was curious as hell.

So that evening, I flipped through the channels until I found The Bachelor. And then, my mouth dropped.

The dude's daughter was a freaking contestant! And she was like the main part of the show! Do you all watch it? Emily is to whom I'm referring. He gave her a rose and she's moving onto the next round. Her story is actually pretty incredible, and everyone that works here knows who she is. I've never met her, but holy crap, I see her dad all the time.

I don't think he'll stop by and see me anymore.

Good for you for being honest. And who does he think he is? Just cause he's got money? His daughter is hard up and on TV to find a guy? I hate people like that!!

hahaha too funny - I wouldn't worry about it too much UNLESS she ends up being the winner and marries the dude. I don't watch The Bachelor either... honestly I don't think it's about finding love.

Hoooooly crap. I don't watch the show either but I heard about her story because they were splashing it all over the interwebs.

Anyway, how the heck were you to know?! I kind of like how sly the father was, "ohhh you know, just check it out tonite." Touché, Mr. Coal-man. Touché.

Wow. That's a little bit odd. Reality TV is one of my upcoming rants, I'm sure.

It has been said before, but I'll say it again. It is a mighty small world we live in. The coal man could have been a touch more forthcoming with the 411. Tricky old coot.

FreeFlying said...

Geesh. Her story is so tragic. But you probably helped out because the bachelor IS totally lame and now her dad will tell her that you said so and you're actually saving her from another broken heart. Excellent work, Jumble!

OMG seriously?! I never have watched the Bachelor but I would definitely feel the same way as you!!!! That is craaaazaaaaay!

You didn't insult her, just the guy on the show. Of course, his daughter is probably in love with him, but no one is supposed to know that yet. LOL I'm sure he'll hear much worse about his daughter being on a reality show before it's all over.

I actually thought he might be the one looking for a wife but his daughter... must be desperate considering she must see people with money around her all the time.

Awww, he is probably wishing he had a daughter like yourself, someone with sense and honesty. At least he didn't turn out to be Samantha's dad :) :) :).

StephanieC | Seriously? Really?? Seriously? said...

Krissy's right - it's not like you insulted his daughter. And the bachelor could really be a jerk (all of which coal guy's daughter won't really know until later on).

So no worries, Jumble, I think you'll be just fine. The guy probably appreciates it that you aren't 20 miles up his butt and a yes woman.

Going to read Emily's "story" now...

Ummm, wasn't the bachelor convicted of forgery or something like that? Doesn't sound like much of a catch to me. As for Emily's father, it sounds like he's proud of his daughter's 15 minutes of fame. Makes me glad my father is proud of me for "real" stuff.

Wow, I wonder how he feels having a daughter on that show...I would be sad and embarassed, personally.

I agree. You were just being honest, and you didn't insult his daughter. That was a bit sneaky of Mr Coal Man I thought anyway!

Teresa said...

It's not like you said anything insulting about his daughter. You were talking about the show in general. If he was going to brag about his daughter being on it, he should have come out with that in the first place.

What a small world! Moral of the story is whenever someone asks an odd and out-of-the-blue question always ask them "why do you ask" before responding.

So you could say you "sort of" met a celebrity...well, close enough!

It's weird what connections you have to people who are on TV.

You watch Dexter? He grew up in the next time over and for their St. Patrick's Day parade last year he was the grand marshall. I didn't see him because I was at the tail end of the parade in the band but the story I got from my Yearbook staff who went to see him.

I'm giggling here cos it's the kinda thing i'd say as well!!
My biggie was years ago. I likem Tom Conti (he's a scottish actor - lovely, was in Shirley Valentine and Friends for a few episodes)
One day many years ago, i was at the doctors. She asked what she could do for me and i replied "oh, a new body and a couple of nights with Tom Conti should do me!"
She laughed and replied "oh, you don't really want him do you??!
"
I said i wouldn't mind and cheekly asked how she would know.
the reply was "he's married to my auntie!!!!"

ever want the ground to open up and swallow you!!
She laughed and thought it was funny thank goodness!

I'm surprised that show is still on. Has there been one successful relationship come from that show?

@Barb- Haha! Thanks! I really didn't look at it that way. I was just thinking "oh shit, I'm dumb"

@Amy- If they get married, wonder if I'd be invited to the wedding?

@Steph C- LOL Indeed, Steph. Sneaky bastard.

@Danger-can't wait to read it!

@ib- It sure is. And he sure was!

@FreeFlying- OMG I totally saved the day didnt I? HAHA.

@Meg O- I know, right? It's like why didn't I see that coming in my head?

@Krissy- True. Very true. That's why I love you.

@Bubbles- Yea and she was engaged to a Nascar driver but he died so I'm pretty sure she will never want for anything.

@Twilight- OMG I so love you. You are awesome.

@StephanieC-Thank you, Stephanie! I hope he sees it that way!

@Soapbox- Yeah I think so. And the last time he was on he didn't even pick anybody.

@AMC- He didn't seem too sad or embarassed. He seemed proud. HAHA

@Thisisme-Right?! He was sneaky. He was setting me up the whole time.

@Teresa- Agreed! He should have just been up front with it if he didn't want my honest opinion!

@The Empress- Couldn't have said it better myself.

@Sandra- Yea...I kinda did, huh? LOL.

@Becca- OMG really? That's awesome. My english teacher was Don Knotts' niece...if you know who that is.

@Julie- I love that story!! Too funny and very similar to my own!

@Notthehero- Trista and Ryan. And then I stopped watching it. They are actually still together believe it or not.

His daughter is the only one I think is even on there for the right reasons... and he should pick her if he wants someone genuine!

That's just my opinion! (:
