Black cats and Voodoo Dolls

I was visiting my grandmother last week and she made Boyfriend and me some breakfast for dinner. My favorite thing ever! I love pancakes at 6:00 in the evening.

Anyways, I had the song, “Can’t always get what you want” in my head and kept humming it while sitting at the table. She finally yelled at me and said, “You cannot sing at the table. It is bad luck.”

It got me thinking. My grandmother thinks that EVERYTHING is bad luck. For instance, you cannot burst a balloon in the house, break a mirror, open an umbrella, walk under a ladder or cross paths with a black cat without catching some bad luck.

The only superstition I have is that you cannot say something like, “I’ve never been in a car accident” without immediately knocking on wood afterwards. But I wondered. What were some other superstitions? I resorted to Google.

Seeing an ambulance is very unlucky unless you pinch your nose or hold your breath until you see a black or a brown dog. {This could be deadly. Carry a black or brown dog with you at all times}

It's bad luck to put a hat on a bed.

If you make a bedspread, or a quilt, be sure to finish it or marriage will never come to you {I never finish what I start. Thank god I can’t sew}

If you say good-bye to a friend on a bridge, you will never see each other again.

Do not lean a broom against a bed. The evil spirits in the broom will cast a spell on the bed. {Hmm, I just thought those were dust bunnies}

To drop a comb while you are combing your hair is a sign of a coming disappointment. {Oh dear, I just did that this morning}

A cricket in the house brings good luck. {But is annoying as Hell}

For good luck throughout the year, wear new clothes on Easter. {Any excuse is a good excuse to shop for new clothes!}

If you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devil's luck . Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, Theodore Bundy and Albert De Salvo all have 13 letters in their names. {I counted. I’m safe with 19}

If you use the same pencil to take a test that you used for studying for the test, the pencil will remember the answers. {Smart pencil, it is.}

If 3 people are photographed together, the one in the middle will die first. {WHAT?!? I have like tons of photos with myself in the middle.}

If you leave a rocking chair rocking when empty, it invites evil spirits to come into your house to sit in the rocking chair.

A spider is a repellent against plague when worn around the neck in a walnut shell. {Bring on the plague, because there is no way in Hell I’m doing that.}

P.S. Sang that freakin' Ricky Martin song through this whole post.

P.P.S. Ready for you trivia question??? As always, first person to answer gets to choose who will be featured on the Giggle Button for the week.

What is the world's biggest selling copyrighted game?

My guess is Scrabble.

Sounds like your Grandma and mine went to the same superstition school.

Black cat....say bread and butter 3x
Hat on the bed...shoes on the table...real bad
Give a purse/wallet as gift...must put penny in
Money on the floor...means money at the door
New Years...must eat mince meat pie for good luck

Too funny isn't it?

The pencil thing reminded me of when I was in college. I had a superstition about taking tests in the same state of mind that I studied for them. Most of the professors didn't take kindly to me showing up for exams drunk though.

Did you know it's bad luck to walk backwards through a sliding glass door while wearing an orange shirt and pink socks?

@Barb- Good guess, but that's not it! Try again! I've always heard that you should eat sour crout on New Year's. Yuck. And I've given lots of purses as Christmas gifts and I totally didn't know you were supposed to put a penny in. Ooops.

@SD- Is that for real or are you just messing with me? Because who wears pink socks with an orange shirt? LOL

Going to guess Monopoly.

If your palm itches, you will soon receive some money.

I was thinking Monopoly as well. I'm not very supersticious (I live with a black cat, after all!), but I do knock on wood ;)

I have superstition OCD...I constantly (CONSTANTLY) knock on wood and recite the same thing in my head while doing it; if there is roadkill I have to do the Catholic cross thingey (uh, don't know what it's called because I'm not Catholic), and if someone has an eyelash on their face I make them wish and then guess if the lash is on my thumb or finger..yeah. I'm right up there with your grandma! Hed hed down under

@Peregrin- Ding ding ding! You got it. Email me and let me know who will be featured on the Giggle Button (jumblemash@gmail.com)

@Hornet-Well are you lucky or unlucky? Maybe you can prove the black cat thing untrue? :)

@Hed-Catholic cross thingey. LMAO. Love it. I don't know what its called either.

I've got one for you - my Grandmother used to go batshit if I did this - it's bad luck to put a new pair of shoes on a table. Go figure.

Oh superstisions are so lovely. I have a lot but molstly when it comes to sports. But my main one is that you can't say "thank goodness ___ has never happened to me" or else you have to knock on wood.

Loved these that you found.... Who puts their hat on while in bed?

Don;t know if I agree with that pencil trick but I have found that if you study while chewing gum and then chew the same flavor gum during the test it is easier to remember what you studied

I need to start coming over here sooner because monopoly was my guess :) You need to email me before you post your trivia question. LOL give me an unfair advantage ;)

@Molly- Hmm. I've never heard that one before! That's where I always sit my new purchases, including shoes. Ooops.

@MissV- That's really sweet, thanks!

@Aimee- You don't think that would be cheating at all? LOL Just asking because sometimes my moral compass is all out of wack. And does that gum thing really work? I may have to try that.

@Becca- sorry about that. I know it sucks, he has lived in my head for two days now. But now it's Shake your bon bon.

@Nicki- A scarf, maybe. But a hat? That's just ridiculous.

@Jess- I actually bugged your house so I know all of your ideas. Muahahaha. Hehe, jk. Great minds just think alike. We can't help it :)

@Daffy- Me too!!! We are doomed.

Aimee said...

Naw it wouldn't be cheating. It would just be you being helpful lol... The gum thing did help me on a couple of tests.

Oh goodness, its a good job I'm not superstitious or I'd panic right now :P. All the ones in bold I've never heard of but I see at least 4 or 5 ambulances on my way to work and back home every day because the station is there. I have 13 letters in my name, got married on the 13th and.... I think thats it.
